Born from a love for the Maldives, Velaa Private Island is the passion project of a couple, Radka and Jiří Šmejc, to create the world’s most luxurious private island resort and personal home. Located in Noonu Atoll, a 45 minute seaplane flight from Malé, Velaa is a destination in a category of its own, home to an array of amenities unseen across the Indian Ocean.
Velaa means “turtle” in Dhivehi, the local Maldivian language. Our name is inspired by the generations of sea turtles that inhabit the island and its beautiful coral reef. Conceptualised by renowned Czech architect, Petr Kolář, the design weaves contemporary luxury with intimate Maldivian nuances. Throughout the resort, a subtle design reference to the turtle is always present. From a bird’s eye aerial view, the exclusive over-water villas form the head of a turtle, whilst the island and strategically placed jetties resemble its body and flippers.

Transfers
The island of Velaa is reachable by a 45 minute scenic seaplane ride from Velana International Airport (MLE). Standard transfers are booked on a 15 seater public seaplane, operated by Trans Maldivian Airways. Alternatively, a private charter can be arranged on a Velaa-branded 9 seater luxury seaplane.
Guests travelling to Maldives via private jet can opt to land at Maafaru International Airport, 26.6km from Velaa Private Island Maldives. From there, our modern fleet of vessels can be booked for the 35 minute over-water transfer.

Designed by award-winning interior designer, Patricia Urquiola, NIKA is a sophisticated space that recalls the surrounding nature. In her design, she plays with the defining lines between interior and exterior areas. Lighting and textile elements contribute to forge a brighter and intimate ambiance, where guests are invited to retreat and enjoy a minimalist, yet refined environment. Custom made furniture pieces include the three Craaft lamps, which are entirely made out of white translucent beads.
